Tom Brady Slams Roughing Call in Lions Win Over Packers: ‘Definitely Not Roughing the Passer’

Tom Brady did not hold back in the FOX booth Sunday as the Detroit Lions edged the Green Bay Packers 20-17 at Ford Field.

With 2:45 left in a 17-17 game, Packers defensive tackle Karl Brooks broke through to hit Jared Goff just after an 18-yard completion to Sam LaPorta. Officials flagged Brooks for roughing the passer, adding 15 yards and putting Detroit in field goal range.

Brady, calling the game for FOX, reacted instantly:

“Oh my goodness, what is that? There’s no way. Brooks on the tackle… It’s definitely not roughing the passer.”

It was the third controversial flag Brady questioned. Earlier he defended Brenton Cox Jr.’s roughing call in the third quarter and Derrick Barnes’ unnecessary roughness call in the fourth, calling both bang-bang plays that should be allowed 99 out of 100 times.

The penalty added 12.8% to Detroit’s win probability according to Next Gen Stats, and Detroit drove for Jake Bates’ walk-off 22-yarder.

Packers players echoed Brady after. Safety Xavier McKinney called the officiating “bulls—” and said it was “killing our momentum… f—ing up the games.”

The loss dropped Green Bay to 4-3 and last in the NFC North. The play has reignited debate about roughing the passer enforcement league-wide.
