Lions Announce Season-Ending Surgery For Rising Rookie After Week 8 Win

Lions came away with win vs Vikings Sunday, but costly — lost several key contributors to potentially long-term injuries. Most significant Jack Campbell neck injury, remains hospitalized with positive preliminary prognosis.

On same play Campbell got hurt (first play fourth quarter), Lions also lost Jimmy Rolder. Fourth-round pick Michigan standout suffered injury behind play, seen pounding ground, left with limp and ruled out right away.

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell gave update fans feared: Rolder’s injury significant, almost certainly will miss rest of season, could require surgery. Tuesday, Detroit officially placed rookie LB Jimmy Rolder on injured reserve, ending his 2026 season after significant hamstring injury.

Devastating outcome for former Michigan standout. Rolder was just finding himself in NFL after missing lot of training camp and preseason due to hamstring injury. Showed intriguing flashes during OTAs, but slowed early.

Clash vs Vikings was second game this season in which Rolder saw defensive snaps — season-high 17 snaps, recorded first career sack before exit. Was third-highest-graded defender for Detroit on PFF per DetroitJockCity.

Now Rolder waits until next season to establish himself as key member of Lions defense.

For Lions, leaves them short-handed at LB — same play lost Campbell and Rolder, plus Terrion Arnold shoulder, Ennis Rakestraw season, etc. Malcolm Rodriguez and Trevor Nowaske likely get more opportunities — Rodriguez made impact right away Sunday. Assuming Campbell not back anytime soon, Amen Ogbongbemiga and Joe Bachie get chances, plus new signings K.J. Britt (active) and Owen Pappoe (practice squad, ex-Cardinals 5th-round).

HC Campbell said Monday wasn’t ruling out external help, will get together with GM Brad Holmes and decide on potential additions ahead of Dolphins Week 9.
