Lions’ Dan Campbell Gives Positive Injury Update on Brian Branch After Loss to Panthers
The Detroit Lions suffered another frustrating defensive performance against the Carolina Panthers, but head coach Dan Campbell provided some encouraging news regarding one of the team’s most important defenders.
After Detroit’s 32-26 loss to Carolina, Campbell gave an update on safety Brian Branch, who has been working his way back from an Achilles injury.
And the update was positive.
Campbell said he is hopeful Branch will practice this week, with approval from the safety’s doctor reportedly being the final hurdle before he can return to the practice field.
“I think it’s really good that he’s gonna practice this week,” Campbell said.
Branch’s return could come at the perfect time
The potential return of Branch would be a major boost for a Lions defense that badly needs reinforcements.
Detroit’s secondary struggled throughout Sunday’s game, allowing Panthers quarterback Bryce Young to throw for 329 yards and two touchdowns.
Carolina wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan also caused major problems, finishing with 14 receptions for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
The Lions have already been dealing with injuries in the secondary, making Branch’s potential return particularly important.
Campbell also provides updates on two other defenders
Branch wasn’t the only injured player discussed by Campbell.
Cornerback Rock Ya-Sin suffered a hamstring injury against Carolina, and Campbell indicated that the veteran defender’s situation did not look particularly promising.
“I don’t think Rock looks good right now,” Campbell said.
Detroit also provided an update on defensive tackle Tyleik Williams, whose status remains uncertain.
Campbell described Williams as “touch-and-go” and said he would be considered day-to-day.
Lions need defensive help
Detroit’s defense has struggled badly through the opening four games, and the Panthers loss only intensified the pressure on defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard’s unit.
The Lions are now 2-2, and their defense will need to improve quickly if they want to remain competitive in the NFC North.
Getting Branch back onto the practice field this week would at least give Detroit some positive momentum.
The Lions will return home to face the Arizona Cardinals on October 11, and all eyes will be on Branch’s practice participation as Detroit looks for answers on defense.
