Drew Petzing Adjusted The Lions’ Offense Right Into His Vision In Week 8
Drew Petzing won the battle against Brian Flores in Week 8.
Play-calling matchup was decidedly one-sided in first half — Vikings DC Flores getting better of Lions OC, Minnesota blitzing overwhelmed Jared Goff and OL, forcing Petzing to abandon downfield passing game.
Lions were held to just 53 yards in first half, 19 of them coming on one play in final seconds before half. Second half was different story — Detroit racked up 164 yards on ground. Jahmyr Gibbs 30-yard TD run gave Lions first lead in third quarter, biggest play of day and showed how Petzing unlocked run game vs NFL’s best defense.
How? Creative run plan to combat Flores run blitzes — Flores sends LBs and DBs to plug gaps that initially looked open, you don’t know what front you’re getting until after snap, prevents double teams.
Petzing had Detroit line up in funky backfields, with two TEs aligned side-by-side and Gibbs behind them. Created two dilemmas for defense. Per Fox Sports unofficial count, Lions ran out of these formations 10 times for 100 yards. On Gibbs 30-yard TD, Detroit didn’t initially line up in formation — Sam LaPorta motioned in at snap, giving Minnesota front seven no time to sort out.
Petzing also busted out CFL-style play — Amon-Ra St. Brown lining up 15 yards off LOS before snap and getting running start on perimeter screen, first time seen in pros. Gained 10 yards. Also trick play from Chip Kelly inspiration — incredible lateral that left Tom Brady in awe, plus multiple TEs off LOS several times.
Takeaway per Fox: “Detroit’s offense has missed Ben Johnson since departure in 2025, but Petzing is pulling off convincing impression. Lions have top-five offense by EPA, Goff on pace for most productive seasons, Gibbs as explosive as ever.”
Pride of Detroit winner: Drew Petzing, OC — “After first half I was ready to crown Petzing as loser, but halftime adjustments worked wonders. On day when offense looked stuck in mud, credit Petzing for complete 180 turnaround when it mattered most.”
