JUST IN: Tennessee’s defensive evolution with linebacker Arion Carter is expected to provide a major game-changer for Vols 2026 season

The Tennessee Volunteers’ defensive transformation under new coordinator Jim Knowles could pave the way for senior linebacker Arion Carter to become one of the most dynamic weapons on the roster during the 2026 college football season.

Knowles, who arrived on Rocky Top earlier this offseason after replacing Tim Banks, is expected to introduce a fresh defensive approach that could maximize Carter’s athleticism in multiple roles.

Despite Tennessee boasting one of the SEC’s deepest linebacker groups, Carter remains a centerpiece of the defense. The unit features Penn State transfer Amare Campbell, redshirt sophomore Edwin Spillman, seniors Jeremiah Telander and Carter, sophomores Jaedon Harmon and Jadon Perlotte, along with promising freshmen TJ White and Brayden Crouse.

While Carter has served as Tennessee’s defensive “green dot” communicator in recent seasons, Campbell is widely expected to assume those responsibilities this year due to his familiarity with Knowles’ defensive system.

That change could allow Carter to focus more on creating impact plays across the field. Rather than being confined to a traditional inside linebacker role, the senior could be deployed as a hybrid defender capable of rushing the quarterback from the edge while continuing to patrol the middle of the defense.

Speaking on WNML’s Josh and Swain, VolQuest’s Austin Price suggested Tennessee could experiment with more 4-3 defensive alignments, particularly following the departure of Chaz Coleman and questions surrounding depth at the Leo position.

According to Price, Carter’s elite athleticism makes him an ideal candidate to line up off the edge in certain packages, giving the Volunteers another pass-rushing threat while creating different looks for opposing offenses.

Although Carter is not expected to become a full-time edge rusher, his versatility could prove invaluable. Knowles may utilize him in creative ways—bringing him to the line of scrimmage before dropping him into coverage or sending him after the quarterback—to disguise defensive schemes and create confusion for opposing offensive coordinators.

Replacing Coleman’s unique skill set will be one of Tennessee’s biggest defensive challenges this season, but Knowles appears to have several options at his disposal. Among them, Carter stands out as one of the most versatile and impactful players capable of helping reshape the Volunteers’ defense in 2026 while further strengthening his NFL draft prospects.
