“I Trust This Coaching Staff”: Four-Star WR Malik Howard Reveals Why He Chose to commit to Vols Over Alabama, Oregon and Notre Dame

Four-star wide receiver Malik Howard has opened up about the reasons behind his commitment to Tennessee, revealing that his confidence in the Volunteers’ coaching staff ultimately set the program apart from its rivals.

Speaking with Vols Wire during KFOA Media Day on Friday, the 2027 Tennessee pledge said trust was the deciding factor in his recruitment as he prepares for his senior season at Oak Ridge High School in Tennessee. Howard said he believes in the direction of the program and is eager to compete for championships in Knoxville.

“It just came down to the fact that I could trust this coaching staff more than I could trust the other coaching staffs,” Howard said. “I want to play for them and win championships together.”

Howard chose Tennessee over finalists Notre Dame, Oregon, and Alabama after receiving scholarship offers from nearly every major Power Four program, including Florida State, Texas A&M, LSU, Michigan, Auburn, Florida, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Miami, and several others. Kentucky became the first school to offer him in May 2024 before Tennessee extended its offer less than two weeks later.

The standout pass-catcher enjoyed a breakout junior campaign in 2025, recording 53 receptions for 778 yards and 11 touchdowns. With his college decision now behind him, Howard said his full attention is on leading Oak Ridge to a state championship, expressing confidence that his team has what it takes to compete with anyone in Tennessee’s Class 6A after finishing 9-2 last season.
