Medical Experts Decode NFL Star Jack Campbell’s Cryptic Message On Horror Neck Injury – And Why It Raises Even More Concern Over Detroit Lions Man’s Future
A ‘rare diagnosis’ may explain Detroit Lions star Jack Campbell’s latest neck injury update as he remains hospitalized.
Lions linebacker suffered significant neck injury that left him motionless on field against Minnesota Vikings in Week 8. Campbell, 26, was immobilized before being carted off and rushed to hospital in particularly scary scenes. Strong fears from NFL players and fans alike over star linebacker’s condition.
After statements from Lions and head coach Dan Campbell, Campbell put out his own message Wednesday. In statement, also released by Lions, Campbell explained that he has ‘full movement in my lower body’ in very promising signs.
And now medical experts have weighed in, concurring that, with all available information, he is on good track for recovery.
Speaking with USA Today, neurosurgeon at NYU Langone’s Spine Center, Dr Darryl Lau, and Georgia-based neurosurgeon Dr Betsy Grunch, both shared expert opinion.
Lau told outlet Campbell’s spinal cord appears to be intact based on available information, with movement in lower limbs another obviously positive factor.
Grunch added hyperextension of Campbell’s neck in tackle could have ‘dinged’ spinal cord. In her expert opinion, ‘ding’ could damage central part of spinal cord and cause swelling that asymmetrically affects arms more than legs.
Both professionals explained result is rare injury called “central cord syndrome.”
“Typically, [patients] can even have full function in the legs and even greater motor loss in the arms,” Grunch added. “I think it’s great news [if it’s CCS] because it’s an incomplete spinal-cord injury. And if he’s already recovering as quickly as reported, then it’s quite possible he can make a full recovery.”
Understandably, without MRI and other imaging available to them, predicting timeline is tough.
Dr. Ari Berg, Spine Surgeon at Hackensack Meridian Health, told NY Post Thursday that while it’s unclear what specific injury and severity Campbell has suffered, movement in legs is “definitely encouraging.” Berg said it is possible Campbell has central cord syndrome. It happens when someone hyperextends neck and bruises center of spinal cord.
Former NFL doctor David J. Chao also called it concerning and not typical: “However, this is concerning. Do we have everything is fine with his extremities, like you normally hear? Not yet. I don’t see it as paralysis; I hope to be correct on that. But good news comes fast; bad news comes slowly.”
“Moving his legs completely strong is very different than being able to run or walk,” Lau said. “You can even do leg workouts but his balance might be completely off. So recovery’s going to be long for him.”
As for return to NFL action, that could be quite some time away for Campbell. Lions have not released diagnosis. Campbell also wrote in statement: “Please continue to keep me and my family in your prayers. We feel the love, and I can’t thank everyone enough. God is good. My faith is strong.”
