Matt LaFleur Addresses Officiating After Packers’ 20-17 Loss to Detroit Lions
The Green Bay Packers dropped to 4-3 after a tight 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions in Week 7 at Ford Field, a game that has left fans talking more about flags than football.
Head coach Matt LaFleur, 46, was asked about the controversial officiating on Tuesday and took a noticeably different tone from many fans and players.
LaFleur said he understands how difficult officiating is in the NFL. According to Ryan Wood of USA Today Sports, he noted that referees have to make bang-bang decisions in an instant.
“I don’t think officiating in this league is very easy,” LaFleur said. “I really don’t. I think things happen quickly, and there’s some bang-bang decisions they have to make. So I don’t think they have an easy job. All you want as a coach is consistency.”
The frustration came from several second-half penalties that extended Detroit drives. A roughing-the-passer call on defensive end Brenton Cox in the third quarter drew a strong reaction from FOX announcer Tom Brady. Other flags on Devonte Wyatt, Karl Brooks, and even Jordan Love had fans questioning the consistency.
LaFleur also revealed he didn’t get many explanations from officials during the game, including on the Wyatt unnecessary roughness call on Amon-Ra St. Brown where he said no whistle had been blown.
It’s worth noting NFL coaches can be fined heavily for criticizing officials, which may have played a part in LaFleur’s measured response.
Despite the loss, Green Bay will quickly turn the page to a Thursday Night Football matchup against the Carolina Panthers in Week 8.
