Lions News Roundup: Kerby Joseph’s Return, Trade Deadline Looming
Detroit had another eventful week before the critical Vikings clash Sunday.
Kerby Joseph’s return to practice is biggest nugget, coming on tail of Brian Branch returning vs Packers — Branch had INT vs Jordan Love and 91.1 PFF grade. Joseph, All-Pro safety, started 21-day practice window Wednesday, 3 weeks to activate. Won’t play vs 6-0 Vikings, but could return Nov 22 vs Buccaneers or Thanksgiving vs Bears — who just reinforced with Jeffery Simmons trade. Campbell said “I do” expect Joseph to play again in 2026, but no timetable, reports say possibly December due to chronic knee issue dating to 2025 camp, possible degenerative concern.
Trade deadline Nov 10 4pm EST: Last big deadline move was desperation after Aidan Hutchinson broken leg — Za’Darius Smith from Browns for 5th + 6th, one-year rental. Now need is different: serviceable CB or LB would lift ceiling. CB still biggest hole — DJ Reed struggling (140.6 rating allowed), Rock Ya-Sin benched, but Rakestraw Jr. and Keith Abney II emerging. Lions were in on Joey Porter Jr. before Dallas won bidding.
O-line earning flowers: Christian Mahogany top 5 guards in pass block rate per PFF (topping list), Tate Ratledge top 5, rookie RT Blake Miller zero sacks allowed, 54 straight starts at Clemson, long-term solution after moving Penei Sewell to LT.
Gibbs needs help: 3rd in NFL with 134 carries, 82.2% rush share comically high, Vaki not seeing field last two games. Pacheco still out, names to consider: Tyler Allgeier, Tony Pollard, Devin Singletary, Kareem Hunt linked.
