The Detroit Lions and Carolina Panthers are set for a fascinating Sunday Night Football matchup, and everything points toward a high-scoring battle.
Detroit enters the game at 2-1, while Carolina sits at 1-2. Both teams have shown the ability to put points on the board, but their defenses have also struggled to consistently stop opposing offenses.
The Lions have scored at least 30 points in each of their first three games, but their defense has allowed an NFL-high 31.7 points per game.
Carolina, meanwhile, has quarterback Bryce Young playing some of the best football of his career. That combination could make for a very entertaining night in Charlotte.
Here are three bold predictions for the matchup.
1. Goff and Young combine for 800 passing yards
This could be a dream matchup for quarterbacks.
Young entered the week among the NFL’s leading passers, while Jared Goff has been highly efficient for Detroit and has yet to throw an interception this season.
The Lions’ secondary has struggled badly against the pass, while Carolina will be without both starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson.
With both defenses dealing with significant problems, don’t be surprised if Goff and Young put up huge numbers.
Bold prediction: The two quarterbacks combine for at least 800 passing yards.
2. Devin Lloyd records his first interception of Goff
With Carolina’s secondary dealing with injuries, linebacker Devin Lloyd could be asked to make an even bigger impact.
Lloyd has quickly established himself as one of the leaders of the Panthers’ defense. He has already shown his ability to create turnovers and make game-changing plays.
Goff, however, has been nearly flawless to begin the season.
That could change Sunday night.
Bold prediction: Lloyd intercepts Goff for the first time this season.
3. Lions survive a wild shootout
If both offenses perform anywhere near their potential, this game could come down to the final possession.
Detroit has the offensive firepower to take advantage of Carolina’s injured secondary, while Young has already demonstrated that he can put up big numbers through the air.
The prediction is for multiple fourth-quarter lead changes before the Lions ultimately escape with a victory.
Bold prediction: Detroit wins 41-38, improving to 3-1 while dropping Carolina to 1-3.
A shootout would certainly test the Lions’ defense, but Detroit’s offensive weapons could ultimately be the difference.
