As the Tennessee Volunteers move deeper into the offseason, uncertainty continues to surround the future of EDGE rusher Chaz Coleman. Despite widespread speculation regarding his status, Coleman has not officially separated from the program, leaving questions about a potential return unresolved.
The former Penn State transfer arrived in Knoxville in January and was expected to bolster Tennessee’s defensive front after spending his freshman season with the Nittany Lions. However, Coleman’s time with the Volunteers has been marked by limited participation. He missed the majority of spring practices due to personal matters and has not been present with the team throughout the summer.
For several months, the prevailing belief around the program has been that Coleman is unlikely to be part of Tennessee’s roster this fall. Nevertheless, no formal announcement has been made regarding his departure, allowing speculation about his future to persist.
Recent rumors have suggested that Coleman could still return ahead of fall camp and rejoin the team. Those reports indicate that the adjustment to the year-round demands of major college football may have played a role in his absence, with some believing he could re-engage with the program before the start of the season.
However, Vol Quest insider Brent Hubbs offered a more cautious outlook during a recent appearance on WNML’s SportsTalk. Hubbs stated that he does not expect Coleman to contribute to Tennessee’s football team in 2026 and indicated that the program appears to have moved forward without him.
According to Hubbs, Coleman never became fully integrated into the team after arriving on campus. While he participated in offseason workouts for a brief period, his involvement diminished shortly after spring practice began, and he has not been consistently present since. As a result, Hubbs believes Tennessee has already adjusted to life without the talented edge defender.
The situation remains unusual given the absence of an official resolution. Tennessee has continued to handle the matter with discretion while respecting Coleman’s personal circumstances. Still, based on the latest information available, expectations for a return appear increasingly unlikely.
Until a final decision is announced, Coleman’s status remains technically open. Yet the growing consensus around the program is that the former transfer prospect is not expected to suit up for the Volunteers during the upcoming season.
