The Detroit Lions are exploring veteran reinforcements along the offensive line, working out veteran guards Laken Tomlinson and Will Hernandez, according to reports.
Tomlinson would be a familiar face for Detroit. The Lions originally selected him in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft before eventually trading him to the San Francisco 49ers.
The veteran guard has put together an extensive NFL career since leaving Detroit, including more than 160 games played and a Pro Bowl selection. His experience could provide the Lions with valuable depth and competition heading into the regular season.
Hernandez also brings significant starting experience to the table. The former second-round pick has spent time with the New York Giants, Arizona Cardinals and other NFL stops while establishing himself as a physical interior offensive lineman.
Detroit’s decision to work out both veterans suggests the team is taking a serious look at adding insurance on the interior of its offensive line. Injuries and roster competition have made guard depth an important area to monitor.
No signing has been announced yet, but bringing in two experienced guards for workouts could be a sign that the Lions are preparing to make another move before the season begins.
