🚨Breaking: Celebrated Coach Jim Tressel Set for Ring of Honor Enshrinement at Ohio Stadium

National championship-winning coach Jim Tressel is set to receive one of Ohio State’s highest honors when he is inducted into the C-Deck Ring of Honor at Ohio Stadium during the Buckeyes’ season opener against Ball State on Saturday, Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., with the game set to air on BTN.

Tressel will become only the third head coach recognized in the stadium’s Ring of Honor, joining legendary figures Paul Brown and Woody Hayes. His induction also marks the first addition to the prestigious display since 2014, when former quarterback and 2006 Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith was recognized.

Taking charge of the Buckeyes in 2001, Tressel quickly restored the program to national prominence and established one of the most successful eras in school history. Under his leadership, Ohio State recorded at least 10 victories in six different seasons and advanced to three BCS National Championship Games, capturing the national title during the unforgettable 2002 campaign.

That championship season culminated in a perfect 14-0 record, highlighted by a dramatic 31-24 double-overtime victory over top-ranked Miami to secure the national crown. The Buckeyes also reached the BCS National Championship Game in both 2006 and 2007, while appearing in a bowl game every year throughout Tressel’s decade-long tenure and competing in eight BCS contests overall.

One of the defining features of Tressel’s time in Columbus was Ohio State’s dominance over longtime rival Michigan, posting a 9-1 record in the rivalry, although the 2010 victory was later vacated by the NCAA.

Beyond the team’s on-field accomplishments, Tressel developed a remarkable collection of talent. During his tenure, 67 players were selected in the NFL Draft, including 14 first-round picks. His teams also produced 57 First Team All-Big Ten honorees, 24 First Team All-Americans, eight Academic All-Americans, and Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith.

Following his coaching career, Tressel transitioned into public service and higher education, serving as president of Youngstown State University and later as Ohio’s lieutenant governor. He has also remained committed to mentoring young people through initiatives such as the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge, continuing his lifelong mission of helping individuals grow academically, physically, mentally, and emotionally.
