Clemson, Dabo Swinney Receive Unwelcome Transfer Portal News Ahead of Pinstripe Bowl…

Less than three weeks before Clemson meets Penn State in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27, head coach Dabo Swinney is facing a significant roster setback. Veteran defensive back Khalil Barnes, one of the Tigers’ top playmakers on defense, announced Tuesday that he intends to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal when it opens in January.

Barnes, a former Freshman All-American and three-star recruit from Bogart, Georgia, emerged as a major contributor in 2023. That season, he became the first player under Swinney to record multiple interceptions and forced fumbles, showcasing the versatility that made him a cornerstone of the secondary. His departure now leaves a noticeable void on a defense already stretched thin.

The Tigers’ 7-5 finish in 2025, the program’s second-worst record during Swinney’s tenure, further exposed depth concerns that had been simmering for several seasons. With as many as 20 seniors departing and key juniors — including standout defensive lineman Peter Woods — evaluating NFL Draft options, Barnes’ exit adds to a growing list of challenges.

Long known for his loyalty-driven recruiting model and limited use of the transfer portal, Swinney has recently acknowledged the need for adaptation. During signing day availability, he suggested Clemson could bring in two to seven transfers to stabilize the roster. “Guys may change decisions,” Swinney said. “We could have somebody leave — we have no idea.”

Despite ongoing criticism that his traditional approach is outdated in an era defined by NIL and rapid roster turnover, Swinney maintains he will adjust without abandoning Clemson’s core principles.

As the Tigers prepare for the postseason in Yankee Stadium, the uncertainty surrounding Barnes’ availability underscores what is shaping up to be a turbulent offseason. Clemson’s streak of 15 consecutive winning seasons remains intact, but looming portal losses signal deeper rebuilding ahead.
