Michigan Given Huge Chance to Win National Championship Despite Big Ten Tournament Loss

The Michigan Wolverines men’s basketball received strong betting odds to compete for the national title in the 2026 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament, even though the team did not win the conference tournament. Despite that setback, Michigan still secured a No. 1 seed after an outstanding regular season under head coach Dusty May.

During the regular season, Michigan performed exceptionally well, finishing with 29 victories and dominating games throughout the year. The Wolverines were particularly impressive on the road, winning every true away game they played. Their consistent performance helped them secure the Big Ten Conference regular-season championship by a margin of four games.

The team’s dominance was clear in many of their victories. Even if only wins by double-digit margins were counted, Michigan still would have finished first in the conference standings. This shows just how comfortably they defeated many of their opponents throughout the season.

Michigan completed the regular season with a 29–2 record and an impressive 24 wins by double digits. They achieved these results while facing the fourth-toughest schedule in the country, which makes their success even more remarkable. In conference play alone, they recorded 16 double-digit wins, a number higher than the total conference wins of several other teams.

Because of this strong performance, sportsbooks have placed Michigan among the favorites to win the national championship. According to betting lines from FanDuel, the Wolverines have +390 odds to win the tournament, which ranks third overall behind the Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball at +340 and the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball at +380.

Several other teams also appear in the championship betting odds but with lower chances. These include the Florida Gators men’s basketball, Houston Cougars men’s basketball, and Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball. Within the Big Ten, teams such as the Illinois Fighting Illini men’s basketball, Purdue Boilermakers men’s basketball, Michigan State Spartans men’s basketball, and Wisconsin Badgers men’s basketball are also listed but with much longer odds.

Betting markets also provide odds for Michigan reaching different stages of the tournament. The Wolverines are listed at +195 to reach the National Championship Game, slightly behind Arizona and Duke, who both have +170 odds. For reaching the Final Four, Michigan is given -120 odds, again just behind the same two programs.

Interestingly, betting options also allow wagers on teams failing to reach the Final Four. In that category, Michigan has -105 odds to fall short, while Duke and Arizona have positive odds. Overall, the situation reflects the unpredictable nature of March Madness, where even the strongest teams can be eliminated early, making it difficult to confidently predict a champion.
