Lions Announce A Series Of Roster Moves Ahead Of Week 9 To Address LB Concerns
Detroit Lions had important but costly win over Vikings Sunday. Having righted ship after three straight wins, Lions feel much better about deep postseason run, but now long list of injuries to think about.
On Wednesday, Lions had walkthrough instead of full practice. Designations on injury report they released are estimates.
As expected, Lions listed Jack Campbell, Cade Mays, DJ Reed, DJ Wonnum as non-participants. Campbell obviously miss Sunday vs Dolphins. Mays, Reed, Wonnum considered unlikely to suit up as well.
In addition, Brian Branch (concussion), Amon-Ra St. Brown (rib), Jacob Saylors (neck), Amen Ogbongbemiga (toe) listed limited. Kerby Joseph also limited, yet to ramp to 100% despite 21-day window activated.
This comes on heels of rookie LB Jimmy Rolder landing on injured reserve after Vikings win (significant hamstring, season-ending, could require surgery). This created need for more help at LB spot, and Lions addressed this need with roster moves Wednesday.
Per Detroit Lions official X:
Lions announce roster moves:
• Signed LB K.J. Britt to Active Roster from NE Practice Squad. • Signed LB Joe Bachie to Active Roster from Practice Squad. • Signed LB Owen Pappoe to Practice Squad.
Context:
Tuesday, Lions announced two moves creating vacancies: placed Rolder on IR and waived rookie safety Bishop Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald signed off Steelers PS late September as Avonte Maddox placed on IR, essentially wasted roster spot after return of Branch and looming season debut of Kerby Joseph.
Britt: 77-game veteran, 5th-round 2021 Tampa, ex- Patriots PS, productive special teamer.
Bachie: familiar veteran, been with team throughout year, special teams help, likely call-up candidate.
Pappoe: former Cardinals 5th-round 2023, 168th overall, visited Lions Tuesday, 960 career special teams snaps, 341 defensive snaps, emergency backup and special teams value when needed.
Same day moves, Lions also now likely to start Malcolm Rodriguez next to Derrick Barnes, Trevor Nowaske as third LB vs Dolphins, with Ogbongbemiga, Britt, Bachie as backups.
