Dolphins’ Jeff Hafley Welcomes His Biggest Challenge Of 2026 In Week 9
Miami Dolphins are going to face toughest challenge of 2026 season, and it will land on shoulders of Jeff Hafley to take it head-on.
Miami will face Detroit Lions, who are number-one offense in league entering Week 9 (top-5 by EPA, 30.7 PPG earlier, now #1 per Phin Phanatic). On Wednesday, Hafley talked about how impressed he is with what Lions have done, but also said this week is great challenge for young guys.
Quote: “I view this as a challenge that we look forward to,” said Hafley.
Miami Dolphins HC Jeff Hafley has nearly impossible task ahead in Week 9 — defense continues to improve, but Week 9 may bring serious setback given Dolphins offensive talent? Actually Lions offensive talent.
List of elite Lions players he must stop:
• Jared Goff – QB (123.3 rating vs blitz, 81.8 PFF passing grade) • Jahmyr Gibbs – RB (NFL’s second-leading rusher, MVP candidate, 30-yard TD vs Flores) • Amon-Ra St. Brown – WR (CFL-style play, first downs) • Jameson Williams – WR (answer to blitzes, dynamic explosive fast) • Sam LaPorta – TE (motion creates mismatches)
Each among NFL’s elite and will challenge Dolphins. Dolphins have struggled to cover TEs; they’ve shut down solid receivers, but Williams and St. Brown on different level.
Hafley believes only route is to be creative with scheme and game plan. Doubling St. Brown will only create coverage issues with Williams. Double them both, LaPorta covered by linebacker.
Then Gibbs, exceptional as RB but also catch ball well. Taking out four big playmakers means taking out Goff, and that too is problem.
Dolphins don’t have great pass rush, and Lions OL is one of best. Anchored by Penei Sewell, Lions line is in-your-face, physical bully that dictates trenches. For Dolphins, not good match-up considering youth and inexperience.
Hafley will need to rely on disguised blitzes, but more importantly, needs to make in-game adjustments, something he hasn’t done consistently well this year.
Lions may be best team Dolphins face all season, at least offensively. If able to keep them in check, would be welcome surprise and further proof what is being installed in Miami is working, but could just as easily be one of longest days for their defense.
Miami enters Week 9 at 1-6 after loss to Chiefs, struggling, while Lions 5-2 coming off emotional win over then-unbeaten Vikings Week 8 where Drew Petzing adjusted offense right into his vision.
