Packers Star Risks NFL Punishment After Blasting Officials Following Lions Loss

Lions’ NFC North Rival Could Face NFL Punishment After Explosive Officiating Rant

The Green Bay Packers could face more consequences following their controversial 20-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, with safety Xavier McKinney potentially risking a fine after publicly criticizing NFL officials.

McKinney did not hold back after Sunday’s divisional showdown, expressing frustration with several calls that he believes made it more difficult for Green Bay to compete.

“I would rather get fined and try to help my team out,” McKinney said, explaining that he felt the officiating was hurting his team.

McKinney Calls Out Controversial Officiating

One of the biggest points of contention was an unnecessary roughness penalty against Packers defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt in the third quarter.

The officials ruled that Wyatt made a second tackle on Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown after the play had ended. However, Packers players argued they had not heard a whistle, raising questions about the decision.

The penalty gave Detroit a first down, and the Lions scored a touchdown two plays later to take a 17-14 lead.

Green Bay was also frustrated by roughing-the-passer penalties involving defensive players Brenton Cox Jr. and Karl Brooks. The latter call drew criticism from Fox analyst Tom Brady during the broadcast.

McKinney questioned the consistency of the officiating, arguing that the Packers were not receiving the same protection for quarterback Jordan Love as other teams’ quarterbacks.

NFL Fine Could Be on the Table

Public criticism of game officials can lead to disciplinary action under NFL rules, meaning McKinney could face a financial penalty for his comments.

The safety appeared prepared for that possibility, making it clear that he believed speaking up for his team was worth the risk.

However, a fine has not been confirmed. McKinney’s comments have raised the possibility of punishment, but that does not mean the league has officially disciplined him.

Packers Must Move Forward After Lions Defeat

While the officiating remains a major talking point, Green Bay also had opportunities to win the game.

The Packers missed two field goals and struggled to turn scoring opportunities into points. Detroit capitalized on key moments before Jake Bates delivered the game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Packers will now look to respond against the Carolina Panthers, while McKinney’s outspoken postgame comments could keep attention focused on the NFL’s handling of criticism directed at its officials.
