Dan Campbell Makes Surprising Admission About Jared Goff After Lions’ Dramatic Win

Dan Campbell Reveals Why He Trusted Jared Goff With a Risky Decision Against the Packers

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell made a bold fourth-down decision against the Green Bay Packers, and his confidence in Jared Goff played a major role in his thinking.

With 4:53 remaining in a tied game on Sunday, Campbell elected to go for it on fourth-and-1 from Detroit’s own 24-yard line rather than punt. The gamble failed when Packers cornerback Keisean Nixon broke through the line and tackled Jahmyr Gibbs for a two-yard loss.

The Packers took possession at Detroit’s 22-yard line, giving them an opportunity to take control of the game. However, Campbell believed his quarterback would give the Lions another chance to respond if Green Bay scored.

“I believed we were going to get it, but I knew what we were conceding if we don’t,” Campbell explained Monday. He added that he was confident Detroit would get the ball back with enough time to answer.

Lions Defense Comes Up With a Crucial Stop

Campbell’s confidence was rewarded when Green Bay failed to capitalize on the excellent field position.

Packers running back Josh Jacobs could not hold on to a potential 17-yard touchdown pass on third down. Green Bay then attempted a 35-yard field goal, but Detroit defensive end D.J. Wonnum blocked Trey Smack’s kick.

That defensive play proved crucial in keeping the game tied and giving Detroit another opportunity to win.

Goff praised the defense and Wonnum for preventing Green Bay from turning the failed fourth-down conversion into points.

The Lions then moved down the field. Goff connected with Sam LaPorta for an 18-yard gain, and a roughing-the-passer penalty against Green Bay helped extend the drive. Detroit eventually ran down the clock and set up Jake Bates for the game-winning field goal as time expired.

Goff Continues to Deliver at a High Level

Goff finished the game completing 22 of 32 passes for 301 yards and two touchdowns.

Through six games, he has thrown 14 touchdown passes without an interception, matching Russell Wilson’s 2019 mark for the most touchdown passes without a pick over the first six games of a season.

Campbell acknowledged that Goff’s performances have made it increasingly difficult not to put the ball in his hands more often.

The quarterback’s consistency has become a major asset for Detroit as it navigates a competitive NFC North race.

Lions Still Have Issues to Fix

Despite the victory, Detroit has areas that need improvement before its next game.

The offensive line struggled to create space for Gibbs, who finished with 143 yards on 34 touches against Green Bay. Campbell emphasized that the blocking must improve to give the running back more opportunities to break free.

Center Cade Mays also had a difficult return after missing the first five games with a wrist injury. He was involved in both of Detroit’s lost fumbles, including a mishandled exchange with Goff, and struggled on some blocking assignments.

Defensively, the Lions have shown progress over their last two games, reducing their average yards allowed from 426 to 326. They have also recorded six sacks and two interceptions during that stretch.

However, maintaining that improvement will be important against stronger opposition.

Vikings Showdown Looms

Detroit improved to 4-2 with the win and now faces a major challenge against the undefeated Minnesota Vikings.

Campbell’s willingness to trust Goff in a high-pressure situation reflects the confidence the Lions have in their quarterback. But the team cannot afford to rely on late defensive escapes and missed scoring opportunities from opponents every week.

With Minnesota arriving next, Detroit will need better offensive-line play and continued defensive progress if it hopes to extend its winning run.
