Lions Urged to Trade for Colts Cornerback Charvarius Ward Before Deadline

The Detroit Lions are 4-2 but their cornerback room remains unsettled, and one name keeps coming up as a low-cost fix.

According to Heavy.com, the Lions have been urged to trade for Indianapolis Colts cornerback Charvarius Ward before the trade deadline.

Ward signed a three-year, $54 million extension this past offseason and is under contract through 2027, though the team could save $18M by moving on after this season. That structure makes him both a potential starter beyond 2026 and effectively a rental if he doesn’t fit.

The Colts are already in sell mode at 2-5, having traded Quenton Nelson to Seattle and fired their GM. According to Mike Payton of A to Z Sports, Ward could be available for as little as a fifth-round pick — a simulator value he called a deal Brad Holmes “would make any day of the week.”

Ward’s resume: former UDFA who won a Super Bowl with Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, signed 3-year $40M deal with San Francisco 49ers in 2022, made Pro Bowl in 2023, then signed with Colts.

Detroit has shuffled at CB all season — Rock Ya-Sin, Roger McCreary, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. (now dealing with ankle injury), and even special teamer Khalil Dorsey have rotated. The group got by vs Green Bay in Week 7, but is seen as a problem moving forward.
