Kurt Warner Calls Out Lions Defense Over Questionable Coverage Against Packers
Even in a win, the Detroit Lions’ defense caught the attention of a Hall of Fame quarterback — and not in a good way.
NFL legend Kurt Warner shared strong comments about Detroit’s defensive approach during their 20-17 Week 7 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
The play in question came at the 5:51 mark of the second quarter. Facing a fourth-down situation, Jordan Love connected with Christian Watson for a 28-yard gain that extended Green Bay’s drive.
Warner, watching as an analyst, took to X to break down what he saw as a major coverage issue.
“No idea what Detroit D is doing sometimes? Trying to be cute and innovative, it appears, and leave gapping holes all over the place ‘IF’ O has the right play called!” Warner posted.
He continued: “Not sure how to play good solid D with so many unsound looking coverages! Here they go to a T2 on one side and some sort of C3 on other side (or invert 2 where CB never moves towards middle) & there is so much space in middle it’s stealing!!”
Warner’s criticism centered on Detroit’s use of split coverage concepts — resembling Cover 2 on one side and Cover 3 on the other — which left the middle of the field wide open for Love to attack.
While the Lions ultimately held Green Bay to 17 points and forced key stops late, including Brian Branch’s fourth-quarter interception in his return, Warner’s comments highlight the ongoing scrutiny of Detroit’s pass defense, which entered the game as the NFL’s worst.
It was a win, but according to one legend, there’s still plenty to clean up before facing the undefeated Vikings in Week 8.
