Jared Goff has another chance to make history against a familiar opponent when the Detroit Lions travel to Arizona on Sunday.
Goff has been remarkably successful against the Cardinals throughout his career, posting a 9-1 record in 10 meetings. The lone loss came during his rookie season, when the Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Rams 44-6.
Since then, Goff has completely turned the matchup around.
In his 10 career games against Arizona, Goff has averaged 264.5 passing yards per game, while throwing 16 touchdowns against just four interceptions. His 71.95% completion rate and 106.9 passer rating against the Cardinals further highlight just how comfortable he has been in this matchup.
One of his most memorable performances came in 2021, when the Lions defeated the Cardinals 30-12. Goff completed 21 of 26 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns without turning the ball over.
Now, Detroit needs another strong performance from its quarterback.
Goff enters Week 5 having already thrown for 1,214 yards and nine touchdowns without an interception through four games. Despite Detroit’s 2-2 record, his individual performance has been one of the biggest positives of the Lions’ season.
The Cardinals, however, have shown an ability to create turnovers, entering the matchup with seven takeaways. That could make protecting the football particularly important for Goff.
If Detroit’s defense continues to struggle, Goff and the offense may need to put together another 30-point performance to secure the win.
Considering his history against Arizona and the way he has played so far this season, another big afternoon from Goff would hardly be a surprise.
For the Lions, Sunday could be another opportunity for Goff to remind everyone why the Cardinals have been one of his favorite opponents throughout his NFL career.
