Dan Campbell’s Return To Hard Rock Renews Debate Over Dolphins Letting Him Go

After a disappointing defeat to the New England Patriots, the Miami Dolphins are turning attention to Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions.

With this game, there is interesting storyline many Dolphins fans may not be aware of: this Sunday marks Dan Campbell’s first return to Hard Rock Stadium since serving as Miami’s interim head coach in 2015.

Given what Campbell has accomplished with Lions, it’s hard not to wonder whether Dolphins made right decision in letting him go, or if it was costly mistake.

Did Miami Dolphins make right decision to let Dan Campbell go?

To settle debate: yes, Dolphins made right decision to let future Detroit Lions head coach walk. However reasons why it was right move are more nuanced.

Let’s roll back to beginning when Dan Campbell assumed head coaching role after Joe Philbin was released.

Dolphins began season with 1-3 record, which led to Joe Philbin’s dismissal. Team as whole was underperforming. Campbell stepped in as interim head coach, won his first two games, and ultimately finished stint with 5-7 record. He finished season by beating Bill Belichick and Tom Brady 20-10.

Several media outlets and people familiar with situation have pointed out same thing: current Lions head coach brought level of motivation and passion Miami hadn’t experienced in long time.

Fast forward: Miami Dolphins chose Adam Gase as head coach for following season, while Campbell moved on to become assistant coach with New Orleans Saints. Gase was considered one of promising offensive minds in NFL.

With Gase, Miami returned to playoffs with 10-6 record in his first season. So, at time, this change made sense.

Today, Campbell is recognized as one of NFL’s most respected head coaches, known for energy, passion, leadership. With Lions, Campbell reached 2023 NFC Championship Game and posted 15-2 record in 2024. Bring explosive offense into Miami.

His experience with Saints, followed by early years rebuilding Detroit, shaped him into head coach he became.

While letting him go was right call at time, it’s hard not to wonder how different things might look for Miami if franchise had taken chance on him.

Perhaps Dolphins wouldn’t be facing another team rebuild and would instead have established head coach leading way. But that’s classic butterfly effect of wondering what could have been. Now, it’s up to Jeff Hafley [Dolphins interim] to try to make none of it matter.
