Lions Urged to Replace Jack Campbell With All-Pro In Trade
Lions are going to have to prepare for life without LB Jack Campbell for foreseeable future.
Campbell remains hospitalized with neck injury suffered on first play of 4th quarter vs Vikings Nov 1 — carted off. Team also lost rookie 4th-rounder Jimmy Rolder hamstring on same play. Lions signed LB K.J. Britt after injuries. Indications are positive per team, but Campbell being taken care of at hospital, green dot helmet communication role now open — Derrick Barnes handled it after Campbell left.
One name that will come up often is Philadelphia Eagles All-Pro LB Zack Baun, according to Mike Payton of A to Z Sports:
“That would put Detroit in a good spot with Derrick Barnes, Baun, and hopefully Campbell. We don’t know what Campbell’s situation looks like at this point, but Baun would help regardless. He’s one of the best coverage LBs in football.”
Payton notes most projections have Baun for two 2nd-round picks, but thinks Lions could call Eagles, offer 3rd or 4th and get done — “I think simulator is wrong here.”
Heavy’s Parker Hurley notes Eagles side wants at least 2nd — NBC Sports Philly’s Dave Zangaro: “You obviously can’t give Baun away. He’s one of best inside LBs in NFL and a captain. Can’t entertain offers for anything less than second-round pick.”
Baun has $11M cap hit next year per Spotrac — not bad for All-Pro conversation player since signed by Eagles. Eagles 2-6, QB out for season, RT retired, traded starting center for 2nd — appear committed to listening.
If Campbell misses significant time, Lions must consider move. Depth now: Derrick Barnes, Malcolm Rodriguez, Trevor Nowaske expected three starters Week 9. Baun would push Rodriguez to reserve.
