Lions Edge Packers 20-17 as Controversial Flags Dominate Second Half at Ford Field

The Detroit Lions escaped with a 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, but the final score was not what most people were talking about afterward.

Green Bay finished with eight penalties for 81 yards, many of them coming in the second half on crucial drives. Two roughing the passer calls drew the most scrutiny.

The first came on defensive end Brenton Cox Jr., who was flagged after being tripped by Lions center Cade Mays and falling into Jared Goff. The second came late with the game tied at 17, when Karl Brooks was flagged for bringing Goff down — a call that Fox analyst Tom Brady questioned live on air, saying “oh my goodness, what is that?”

Other flags added to the frustration: an unnecessary roughness on Devonte Wyatt after a late scrum where Amon-Ra St. Brown inadvertently kicked an official, and a questionable intentional grounding on Jordan Love that the crew said did not reach the line of scrimmage.

The Packers had their own mistakes — going 1-for-4 in the red zone, two missed field goals under 40 yards by rookie Trey Smack, and key drops — but players did not hide their anger about the officiating. All-Pro safety Xavier McKinney called the officiating “bulls—t” and said the game was “for sure” stolen.

Detroit improved with Goff throwing for 303 yards and two scores, while Green Bay fell to 4-3 with two division losses.
