Brian Branch Sends Strong Message as Lions Return Nears
The Detroit Lions received a major boost this week as Pro Bowl safety Brian Branch returned to practice for the first time since suffering a torn Achilles last season.
After nearly 10 months of rehabilitation, Branch was back on the field Wednesday, taking part in individual drills as he begins the final stage of his comeback. The Lions have now opened his 21-day window to determine when he can return to the active roster.
Branch made it clear that getting back on the field means a lot to him.
“It’s been a long time coming,” Branch said, expressing how good it felt to be back around his teammates and getting back into the rhythm of football.
The timing could not be better for Detroit.
The Lions’ defense has struggled badly through the first four games, ranking last in the NFL in both passing yards allowed and points allowed. Branch’s absence has been particularly noticeable as Detroit has dealt with multiple injuries in the secondary.
Head coach Dan Campbell has cautioned that Branch will need to shake off some rust after such a long layoff, but the safety’s return to practice is an important step.
Branch has also remained optimistic about fellow safety Kerby Joseph, who is continuing his own lengthy rehabilitation. Branch indicated that he believes Joseph will eventually make his return as well.
For now, Branch’s focus is on getting himself ready.
The Lions do not have to activate him immediately. Once his practice window opens, Detroit has up to 21 days to place him on the 53-man roster. That means his return to practice is significant, but it does not automatically mean he will play Sunday against Arizona.
Still, seeing Branch back on the practice field is exactly the kind of development Detroit desperately needed after its defensive struggles through four weeks.
If he can return to his previous level, Branch could give the Lions’ secondary a major lift as they try to turn their season around.
