NFL Insider Urges Lions to Make Move for Much-Needed Secondary Upgrade
The Detroit Lions’ defensive struggles have reached a point where an NFL insider believes the team needs to make a move.
After allowing 32 points to the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, Detroit sits at 2-2 and has the NFL’s worst defense by a significant margin. The Lions are giving up 423.8 yards per game, leaving the secondary as one of the biggest concerns heading into the heart of the season.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler believes Detroit should be looking outside the building for help.
Fowler specifically urged the Lions to explore the cornerback market after Detroit previously missed out on Joey Porter Jr., who was traded from Pittsburgh to Dallas.
“The Lions should make a move for a cornerback,” Fowler wrote, pointing to the team’s lack of depth at the position.
Two veteran names emerge as potential options
Fowler identified two intriguing possibilities for Detroit.
One is Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Kristian Fulton, who has moved in and out of the Chiefs’ lineup. Fowler suggested that the Lions and Chiefs could potentially work out a deal involving his contract.
Another name is much bigger: Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey.
Fowler questioned whether Ramsey is actually available, but suggested Detroit should at least make the call.
For the Lions, the need is obvious.
Brian Branch is nearing his return to practice, while Kerby Joseph is also expected to eventually return. However, Detroit’s cornerback situation remains unsettled, and the defense has struggled badly in coverage throughout the first four games.
The Lions have plenty of talent on offense, with Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jameson Williams leading the way. But if the defense continues giving opponents easy opportunities, Detroit’s playoff hopes could become much more difficult to maintain.
Will Brad Holmes make the call?
Detroit’s front office has until the trade deadline to decide whether the current secondary can improve internally or whether outside help is necessary.
A veteran corner could provide an immediate boost, but acquiring one would also require the right trade price and financial commitment.
For now, there is no indication that a deal for Fulton or Ramsey is imminent.
But with the Lions’ defense struggling this badly, the pressure on Brad Holmes to explore every available option is only getting bigger.
