Bryce Young Makes His MVP Case in Spectacular Performance Against Lions
Bryce Young delivered one of the biggest performances of his young NFL career on Sunday night, leading the Carolina Panthers to a thrilling 32-26 victory over the Detroit Lions.
With the entire football world watching on Sunday Night Football, Young looked completely comfortable under the bright lights. The Panthers quarterback repeatedly found ways to exploit Detroit’s struggling secondary and helped Carolina improve to 2-2 on the season.
Young finished the game 29-of-41 passing for 329 yards and two touchdowns. He also completed his first 11 passes of the night, setting the tone for an impressive performance.
Young stepped up despite injuries
What made Young’s performance even more impressive was the supporting cast around him.
The Panthers entered the game without wide receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette, forcing Young to rely heavily on other weapons.
Rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan answered the call in spectacular fashion, finishing with 14 receptions for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
Young also received contributions from former Alabama teammate John Metchie, helping Carolina keep its offense moving against Detroit.
The numbers are getting difficult to ignore
Through four games, Young has established himself as one of the NFL’s most productive quarterbacks.
He now leads the league with 1,268 passing yards and has thrown nine touchdowns, putting him firmly into the conversation among the league’s top quarterbacks.
His ability to perform under pressure has also been particularly impressive. Young has repeatedly shown the pocket awareness and creativity that made him such a highly regarded prospect coming out of Alabama.
Sunday night’s performance only strengthened the argument that Young has taken a major step forward in his fourth NFL season.
Is Bryce Young really an MVP candidate?
It’s still early, but Young’s numbers and performances have made the MVP conversation impossible to ignore.
The Panthers will need to keep winning if Young is going to have a serious chance at the award, but Sunday’s primetime victory was exactly the type of performance that can elevate a player’s case.
More importantly, Young is showing that the early criticism surrounding his NFL career may have been premature.
With Carolina now sitting at 2-2 and Young playing at an extremely high level, the Panthers suddenly have plenty of reasons to believe their quarterback can lead them somewhere special this season.
