The Detroit Lions are awaiting further information on the injury sustained by starting left guard Christian Mahogany during Sunday’s season-opening victory over the New Orleans Saints.
Mahogany was forced to leave the game during the first half after suffering an injury that was initially believed to involve his knee. The third-year offensive lineman was later ruled out, with Ben Bartch replacing him for the remainder of the contest.
The injury occurred in the first quarter while Mahogany was moving downfield to block on a run by Jahmyr Gibbs. He appeared to trip before falling awkwardly to the ground.
Following the Lions’ dramatic 31-30 victory, head coach Dan Campbell said the team was still uncertain about the full extent of Mahogany’s injury. Campbell revealed that an initial scan produced encouraging results but suggested the issue could be related more to Mahogany’s hip than his knee.
“I don’t really know. I hate to say one way or another,” Campbell said. “We did do a scan that really ended up being negative, so that’s good news, but that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods. Sounds like it could be more hip-ish, maybe. But we’ll see.”
Mahogany entered the season after starting 11 games for Detroit last year. He had faced competition for the starting left guard position during training camp, with Bartch and Juice Scruggs also in the mix.
Bartch, who was recovering from a season-ending Lisfranc injury, had experienced a slower-than-expected return and also spent time in concussion protocol. Scruggs, meanwhile, was moved from guard to center following a wrist injury suffered by starting center Cade Mays.
The Lions are already dealing with challenges along the offensive line, as Mays was placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss at least the first four games of the regular season.
Mahogany also dealt with injury issues last season, missing time after suffering a fractured fibula during Detroit’s Week 9 loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Bartch played the remainder of Sunday’s game after replacing Mahogany. Despite committing a costly holding penalty in the fourth quarter, Detroit quarterback Jared Goff praised the offensive line for its performance under difficult circumstances.
Goff highlighted Bartch’s ability to step into the lineup and credited the unit for its pass protection and contributions to the running game.
As the Lions prepare for their next game, Mahogany’s condition will remain an important storyline. The team is expected to continue evaluating the injury before determining whether the starting left guard will miss additional time.
