WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY WELCOMES NEW ERA OF LEADERSHIP: Michael T. Benson Appointed as 27th President

 

West Virginia University (WVU) has announced the appointment of Michael T. Benson as its 27th president, effective later this year. Benson, the current president of Coastal Carolina University (CCU), will succeed Gordon Gee, who has led WVU since 2014.

 

Benson brings a wealth of experience in higher education administration to WVU, having served as president of CCU since January 1, 2021, where he also holds a professorship in history. His extensive background in leadership roles will undoubtedly serve him well in his new position.

 

Prior to his tenure at CCU, Benson was the president of Eastern Kentucky University from 2013 to 2020, Southern Utah University from 2006 to 2013, and Snow College from 2001 to 2006. His impressive track record of leadership and achievement has earned him a reputation as a highly effective and visionary leader.

 

During his presidency at CCU, Benson oversaw significant milestones, including welcoming the largest and most academically prepared freshman class in the university’s history in August 2021. Under his leadership, CCU achieved a #5 ranking in Best Value Schools for the Southern region by U.S. News & World Report.

 

Benson’s academic credentials are extensive, holding degrees from Brigham Young University, St Antony’s College, Oxford, the University of Notre Dame, and Johns Hopkins University. He is also an accomplished author, with his latest work, “Daniel Coit Gilman and the Birth of the American Research University,” published by Johns Hopkins University Press.

 

Benson’s appointment comes at a pivotal time for WVU, as the university seeks to navigate the evolving landscape of higher education. His extensive experience and proven leadership are expected to guide WVU toward continued growth and academic excellence.

 

The transition in leadership is anticipated to be seamless, with Benson collaborating closely with outgoing President Gee to ensure continuity in university operations and initiatives. The WVU community has expressed optimism regarding Benson’s appointment, citing his track record of fostering academic achievement and institutional advancement.

 

Benson is expected to assume his duties as president of WVU later this year, following the formal approval of his contract by the university’s Board of Governors. As he takes the reins, he will be tasked with building on the university’s existing strengths while navigating the challenges and opportunities of the rapidly changing higher educational landscape
