West Virginia Pursues Top Transfer Target: Memphis DL William Whitlow Jr.

West Virginia football is actively addressing its defensive needs, turning to the transfer portal to bolster its lineup. The Mountaineers recently extended an offer to Memphis defensive lineman William Whitlow Jr., a standout performer and first-team All-AAC selection in 2024.

Whitlow, a versatile 6’2″, 260-pound lineman, showcased his ability to dominate both on the edge and inside this past season. In 11 games, he tallied 24 tackles, seven tackles for loss, four sacks, one forced fumble, and one pass defended.

Although he recorded just one tackle against West Virginia in their recent bowl matchup, his overall season performance has attracted significant attention.

With newly hired defensive coordinator Zac Alley implementing a scheme that features a three-man front, Whitlow’s skill set makes him an ideal candidate for a defensive end role in the system. His combination of power and agility will allow him to impact games both as a pass rusher and a run stopper.

Whitlow’s addition would bring immediate experience and production to a Mountaineers defense in need of reinforcements. With just one year of eligibility remaining, he would likely step into a leadership role while anchoring the defensive front.

West Virginia’s offer reflects the urgency to strengthen a defense that struggled in recent years. If Whitlow chooses the Mountaineers, he would join a rebuilding effort aimed at making WVU a contender in the Big 12 under the guidance of Alley and head coach Rich Rodriguez.

With the portal still buzzing, Whitlow’s decision will be closely monitored as West Virginia looks to build a more formidable defense for 2025.
