Uncertainty Surrounds John Bateman’s Future at Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson has reaffirmed that English forward John Bateman remains under contract for the next two

seasons, but the club is awaiting Bateman’s decision on whether he will honour the deal. The 30-year-old back-rower’s future has come into

question following a turbulent period both on and off the field, including a release to finish the 2024 season with Warrington in the Super

League. Despite speculation regarding a potential move to the Manly Sea Eagles, coach Benji Marshall dismissed rumours of a falling out

between him and Bateman, clarifying that the reports of a dressing room dispute after a loss to South Sydney were false. “I’m actually unsure if

John will return,” Marshall said when asked about Bateman’s status for pre-season training. “What I will say is what’s been reported about

me and John is not true. We’ve had honest, in-house discussions about John’s future, but those will remain private.”

Richardson echoed Marshall’s sentiments, emphasizing that Bateman’s contract is valid for the next two years, and the club is willing to

honour it if Bateman chooses to stay. “We have plans for the future and want players who are committed to being part of that,” Richardson

said. “It’s ultimately up to John and his manager whether he stays, but the contract is there.” As the Tigers prepare for a key off-season with

several new signings, the club’s leadership will continue discussions with Bateman, leaving the decision in the veteran’s hands.
