The Toronto Maple Leafs face a tough decision: extend John Tavares or let him go. TSN analyst Frankie Corrado recently discussed this on the Jay Onrait Show, comparing Tavares’ situation to that of Steven Stamkos with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Corrado noted that if the Lightning were willing to part ways with their captain after winning two Stanley Cups, the Maple Leafs shouldn’t hesitate to let Tavares walk, especially since he hasn’t led Toronto to any major victories.
Despite acknowledging that Tavares has performed exceptionally well, Corrado pointed out that Tavares’ tenure has been marked by a lack of significant team achievements. In Tavares’ six seasons, the Leafs have won just one playoff series. Some might argue that Tavares’ tenure would be more successful if the team had reached at least a Stanley Cup Final, but that hasn’t happened.
**Predicting a Contract Extension for Toronto Maple Leafs Captain John Tavares**
I believe the Leafs should extend Tavares, but with some conditions. Firstly, Tavares shouldn’t receive a long-term deal. A three to four-year contract would be ideal, as anything longer might push him into a situation similar to “Robidas Island.”
Secondly, while Corrado suggested a potential $6 million cap hit for Tavares’ next deal, I disagree. I don’t think Tavares is worth that much at this stage. He might fetch that amount on the open market from a rebuilding team like San Jose or Utah looking for a big-name captain. However, in Toronto, he should aim for around $5 million per season. If Tavares prioritizes money, he might need to look elsewhere.
Lastly, there’s the question of Tavares’ position. Though he has aged well, he may soon be too old to be a reliable second-line center. Paying $5 million for a third-line center isn’t ideal. Moving Tavares to the wing makes the most sense, as he’s still a top-six forward. This shift would provide the Leafs with more flexibility. However, Craig Berube may be stuck with Tavares at center until a suitable replacement is found.
