Texas Longhorns Eyeing Former West Virginia Head Coach Neal Brown for Staff Role

The Texas Longhorns are continuing their offseason coaching overhaul, and their latest target is former West Virginia head coach Neal Brown.

According to reports from Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, Texas is exploring the possibility of adding Brown to its staff. This comes shortly after the Longhorns hired West Virginia running backs coach Chad Scott for the same position in Austin.

Brown, 44, was dismissed by West Virginia at the conclusion of the 2024 regular season following a 6-6 campaign, finishing his six-year tenure with a 37-35 overall record. Scott stepped in as interim head coach for the Mountaineers’ bowl game, but Texas quickly swooped in to bring him aboard for 2025.

Before his time at West Virginia, Brown made a name for himself as the head coach at Troy, where he built a strong program. He also served as the offensive coordinator at Kentucky and Texas Tech, with extensive experience coaching quarterbacks. Given Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian’s emphasis on quarterback development, Brown’s background could be a key reason for his potential hire.

During his time at WVU, Brown went 1-3 against Texas in Big 12 play. His lone win over the Longhorns came in 2021, when the Mountaineers defeated Texas 31-23 in Morgantown during Sarkisian’s first season. However, the Longhorns got their revenge the following year with a 38-20 victory in Austin.

Texas has already undergone major staff changes this offseason, revamping key positions as they prepare for their first season in the SEC. Adding a coach with Brown’s experience could provide another boost to an already strong coaching group.

The Longhorns are set to open their 2025 season with a high-profile showdown against Ohio State in Columbus on Aug. 30. Whether Brown will be on the sidelines in burnt orange by then remains to be seen, but Texas clearly isn’t finished making moves.
