Steven Gerrard, the former Rangers manager, has been associated with not one, but two managerial vacancies this morning. The clubs in question, Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers, are both in the market for new managers following recent departures.
The dismissals of Russell Martin and Gary O’Neil came after their respective teams found themselves struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table. Southampton are currently at the foot of the standings, while Wolverhampton Wanderers occupy the second-to-last position.
Gerrard, who is presently managing in Saudi Arabia, is said to be under consideration for both roles. He has been in charge of Al-Ettifaq for approximately 18 months and has led the Saudi Pro League club through a period of growth.
Despite his current position in the Middle East, Gerrard does have experience in the English Premier League. He spent time as the manager of Aston Villa, taking over the club in November 2021 after leaving Rangers. However, his stint in Birmingham ended in 2022 when he was dismissed due to underperformance.
Before his tenure at Villa, Gerrard had an impressive spell at Rangers, where he revitalized the club and led them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, ending Celtic’s dominance in the league. This success enhanced his reputation as a promising young manager.
His potential return to the Premier League, now with two top-flight clubs reportedly interested in his services, raises questions about his readiness to make the leap back to English football. The chance to manage in a more competitive league could be an attractive proposition for Gerrard.
Both Southampton and Wolves are hoping for a managerial figure who can turn their seasons around and steer them to safety. With the pressure mounting, both clubs are looking for a leader who can address their struggles and lead them up the Premier League table.
Given Gerrard’s previous Premier League experience with Aston Villa, his name being linked to both Southampton and Wolverhampton Wanderers is not a surprise. Whether he will make a return to England remains to be seen, but his name is certainly in the conversation for the vacant roles.
