Panic gripped an El Cajon neighborhood Sunday night as a man was fatally shot in a violent and brazen altercation that erupted in a residential area — with the two suspected gunmen still at large.
According to El Cajon Police, officers were flooded with 911 calls just after 9:45 p.m. reporting multiple gunshots near the 1100 block of East Madison Avenue. When officers arrived, they discovered a man lying in a parking lot, bleeding from gunshot wounds.
Despite being rushed to a nearby hospital, the man—whose identity has not yet been released—was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The brutal killing has sent shockwaves through the normally quiet neighborhood, leaving residents fearful and demanding answers.
Preliminary investigations indicate the victim was involved in an intense altercation with two unidentified males. During the confrontation, one of the suspects pulled out a firearm and opened fire at close range, striking the victim before both suspects fled the scene.
Authorities say the suspects vanished before officers arrived and remain on the run. Their identities and descriptions have not yet been made public, and the motive behind the deadly encounter remains unknown.
“This was a violent and targeted attack,” an El Cajon Police Department spokesperson said. “We are actively pursuing leads and urge anyone with information to come forward immediately.”
The scene was cordoned off overnight as homicide detectives canvassed the area, collected shell casings, and reviewed surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes.
As the manhunt intensifies, police are asking the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. El Cajon’s residents are now grappling with the fear and uncertainty left behind by one of the most jarring acts of violence in recent memory.
