Rich Rodriguez Retains Chad Scott as Offensive Coordinator for West Virginia Mountaineers

Amid a wave of coaching changes for the West Virginia Mountaineers, newly-appointed head coach Rich Rodriguez has made a key decision to retain offensive coordinator and running

backs coach Chad Scott on his staff. Scott’s continued presence is expected to bring stability and continuity to the program as it transitions under Rodriguez’s leadership.

Scott joined the Mountaineers in 2019 as part of Neal Brown’s staff. Over his tenure, he has taken on various roles, including co-offensive coordinator (2019-2021) and run game coordinator (2022-2023), before being elevated

to offensive coordinator in 2024. His coaching versatility and expertise in developing explosive offenses have made him an integral part of the team’s success.

Scott also briefly served as the interim head coach following the midseason firing of Neal Brown. Under his leadership, the Mountaineers delivered one of their best offensive performances of the season in the Frisco Bowl against Memphis. The team recorded a season-high 534 total yards, with quarterback Garrett Greene throwing for a career-high 328 yards. Scott’s game plan showcased an aggressive and dynamic offense that impressed both fans and analysts.

Rodriguez’s decision to retain Scott reflects an acknowledgment of his ability to develop talent and his impact on recruiting, particularly at the running back position. Scott’s presence is seen as a vital factor in retaining key players who might otherwise consider entering the transfer portal amid the coaching shake-up.

The move also provides clarity in a critical offseason role, allowing the program to focus on building a cohesive offensive strategy for the 2025 season. Rodriguez’s trust in Scott’s capabilities underscores the new staff’s commitment to continuity and innovation.

While Scott’s precise responsibilities under Rodriguez’s system remain unclear, his influence on the offensive side of the ball is expected to continue shaping the Mountaineers’ identity.

With Scott’s retention, the Mountaineers take a significant step toward stability and competitiveness as they look to rebuild and excel in the coming season. Fans will now await further announcements as Rodriguez finalizes his staff and prepares to steer WVU into a new era.
