The Green Bay Packers have loaded up on defensive talent the last few seasons, and veteran linebacker Kwon Alexander could be an intriguing addition to that unit before the start of training camp. Alex Ballentine with Bleacher Report shared a few free agents that the Packers should consider adding ahead of training camp. The list included offensive lineman Greg Van Roten and safety Jayron Kearse. Ballentine also laid out why Alexander would be a logical addition.
Ballentine stated, “The Packers should be playing more off-ball linebackers this season as a result of Jeff Hafley’s switch from a 3-4 to a 4-3 base defense.” Kwon Alexander ought to be taken into account. He hasn’t reached the age of thirty yet, in contrast to some of the other linebackers still available.Alexander would give the Packers some injury insurance and allow the younger options to come along at their own pace.”
An extra off-ball linebacker could help the Packers to breathe a little easier with depth at the position.
Is There Still Anything Kwon Alexander Can Do?
The days of Alexander at his most powerful are long gone. He is still a seasoned linebacker with a ton of NFL experience.
In 2015, Alexander was selected in the fourth round out of LSU. He quickly began drawing attention while playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After leading the NFL in solo tackles with 108 in 2016, he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2017.
After such a successful debut, Alexander inked a four-year, $54 million contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2019. Before being traded to the New Orleans Saints, he played in the Bay Area for less than two seasons.
Alexander spent the last few years moving throughout the league. Sadly, he hasn’t been able to duplicate the success of his early career. Only two of the previous seven seasons have seen double-digit games due to injuries.
Although Alexander might draw some interest from teams, there’s no telling when he’ll be fit to play. He may be sidelined for an extended period of time due to a torn Achilles that he sustained against the Packers in November.
However, if healthy, Alexander might be available to a team like Green Bay on a team-friendly contract.
