Rangers are preparing a renewed effort to sign Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle, sources told Football Insider. The club previously attempted to acquire the prolific winger while he was at Swansea City, but their January 2023 offer was rejected by the Championship team.
Now, Plymouth faces a challenge in retaining the 23-year-old, as several clubs, both domestic and international, are interested in the attacker. Football Insider earlier reported that Wolves and Brentford are among the teams trying to secure Whittaker in this transfer window.
Rangers have expressed their interest and are monitoring Whittaker, who scored 20 goals and provided nine assists last season. Plymouth values him at around £15 million and holds a strong negotiating position since his contract runs until 2027. Given this price tag, some might be surprised by Rangers’ interest, though it remains uncertain if Plymouth can secure a fee close to their asking price.
Rangers will have to compete vigorously to land Whittaker. His standout performance last season means any club looking to sign him will need to make a significant effort. With Wayne Rooney recently taking charge of Plymouth, the former Man United star will likely want to keep his key player.
Whittaker, who has been with Plymouth for almost two years initially on loan, has consistently posed a goal threat. His ability to play across the frontline and in deeper midfield roles makes him a versatile option. Additionally, Rangers are also focusing on trying to sign another attacking player, Abdallah Sima, this summer.
