Kenny McLean would be a “great signing” for Rangers and could serve as a valuable senior figure to guide younger new arrivals, according to Derek Ferguson. The former Ibrox midfielder mentioned that several Scotland internationals he spoke to before Euro 2024 instantly named the Norwich captain as the best player in Steve Clarke’s squad. Philippe Clement’s side is interested in the 32-year-old this summer, as reported by the Daily Record on 24 June, with further indications that a move was imminent just a week later [Rangers Review, 1 July].
Although progress has since slowed, a deal is still possible [Rangers Review, 5 July], and Ferguson believes it would be a smart move.
He told Ibrox News: “Personally, I think he’d be a great signing. I spoke to a couple of Scotland players just before they headed to the Euros and asked, ‘Who’s the best player in the squad?’ Kenny McLean was mentioned right away by both.
“He’s had a tremendous season with Norwich, was Player of the Year, and is known for his fitness and consistency. McLean is also believed to be a Rangers fan, which could make the transition smoother. His experience and fitness, along with his ability to play deeper roles, make him an ideal candidate.
“At Aberdeen, Derek McInnes raved about him. I think he’s a solid player who would thrive at Rangers. With the influx of young players, his presence would be invaluable for guidance.
“He would be a good signing for Rangers in my opinion.”
The prospect of McLean joining former Aberdeen youngster Connor Barron in Rangers’ midfield is appealing, given McLean’s standout season in England and his allegiance to the Light Blues. However, his age and the potential cost for a key player at Norwich made the news somewhat unexpected.
The extent of Rangers’ budget remains uncertain, but John Bennett has assured Clement that funds will be available [Daily Record, 14 June]. If the numbers align, McLean could join former teammates Todd Cantwell and Kieran Dowell in moving from Carrow Road to Glasgow.
