The Raiders are hoping that Aidan O’Connell can make a big step in Year 2 and take over that job; if not, Gardner Minshew will be the bridge starter until they find another quarterback. However, what happens if the Raiders decide to look to free agency to find their next elite passer instead of selecting their franchise quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft? Vic Tafur of The Athletic recently answered several mailbag questions, and one of them was about Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys. To no one’s surprise, the answer was yes.
Why not consider it? If the Raiders are a successful team this year but held back by their quarterback, splurging on Dak Prescott, a talented 31-year-old quarterback, might be their best option. Trading up in the draft would likely be difficult again.
Prescott is coming off the best season of his career, finishing second in MVP voting. The Cowboys have consistently had elite offenses with Prescott at the helm, and his career record of 73-41 is impressive.
Prescott is in the final year of his contract, and with the Cowboys unable to use the franchise tag on him after this season, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2025. If he does hit the open market, the Raiders would be wise to consider him.
Quarterbacks like Prescott rarely become available, and he could provide the Raiders with elite quarterback play from day one. If Prescott enters free agency, expect the Raiders to show significant interest.
