The Georgia Bulldogs have been actively evaluating potential transfer targets to enhance their roster, with several names emerging as potential candidates. Recently, there has been
considerable speculation surrounding a group of wide receivers visiting the Bulldogs. However, Georgia’s first official offer to a player in the NCAA transfer portal came on Wednesday
evening, when the program extended an invitation to Charlotte quarterback Deshawn Purdie.
Purdie, a 6-foot-4, 220-pound rising sophomore, joined the Charlotte 49ers from Milford Mill Academy in Baltimore, Maryland. His impressive
physical attributes, combined with his collegiate experience and untapped potential, have made him an attractive option for Georgia as they look to strengthen their quarterback depth for the upcoming season.
A former three-star recruit, Purdie was ranked as the No. 1,669 overall player in the 2024 recruiting class. He quickly made a name for himself
during his freshman year at Charlotte, throwing for 1,802 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, while completing 50% of his
passes. His most notable performance came against Florida Atlantic, where he threw for a career-high 396 yards and three touchdowns, showcasing his ability to produce on the field.
While Purdie’s arm strength and passing ability stand out, he is not known for his mobility. Throughout his freshman season, Purdie actually
finished with negative rushing yards due to a series of sacks, highlighting his lack of escapability outside the pocket.
The Bulldogs wasted no time entering the race for Purdie’s services, particularly after the Florida Gators also expressed interest in the quarterback. Florida is currently working to
secure an official visit from the rising sophomore. Should Purdie choose Georgia, he would join a crowded quarterback room that
already includes Gunner Stockton, Ryan Puglisi, and Jaden Rashada for the 2024 season.
Carson Beck, the Bulldogs’ current starting quarterback, still has one year of eligibility remaining, though his future at Georgia could be uncertain given recent concerns about an injury. This has added further urgency to Georgia’s search for additional quarterback options, with Purdie offering a promising addition to the position group.
Georgia’s recruiting efforts in the transfer portal are likely to intensify in the coming weeks, as the Bulldogs continue to seek players who can contribute immediately. As the team prepares for another title-contending season, bolstering the quarterback room is seen as a key component in maintaining the program’s competitiveness at the highest level.
As the transfer portal landscape continues to evolve, Purdie’s decision will be one to watch closely, as it could have a significant impact on Georgia’s quarterback depth and future trajectory. The Bulldogs will look to capitalize on the opportunity to secure a talented signal-caller, adding to their already impressive roster
