With the MLB trade deadline approaching on July 30, the American League Central division is expected to be a key area of interest.
The Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers are seen as major players on the seller’s market. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, and Minnesota Twins are focused on bolstering their rosters to pursue postseason berths.
Here’s a look at what each AL Central team might do as the trade deadline approaches:
**Chicago White Sox (27-75):**
ESPN’s Jeff Passan predicts the White Sox will be very active in the trade market over the coming week. Given Chicago’s dismal record and the potential for a finish around 43-119, the team has several tradeable assets.
Potential trade targets include RHP Erick Fedde, LHP Tanner Banks, and OF Tommy Pham. There could also be interest in LHP Garrett Crochet and OF Luis Robert, two of the top trade candidates. While teams might hesitate to give up a high price for Crochet due to concerns about his durability, the Los Angeles Dodgers might still make a move. If Crochet is traded, it might be beneficial for the White Sox to keep Robert until the offseason. Despite an injury-riddled season, Robert’s performance could improve his trade value by the end of the year, potentially yielding a significant return.
**Cleveland Guardians (59-40):**
The Guardians, who are currently 19 games over .500, are expected to be more active at the deadline than usual. Zack Meisel of The Athletic suggests that Cleveland will make “multiple trades” to strengthen their roster.
The Guardians’ most urgent need is for pitching help, as their rotation ranks 25th in ERA (4.54) and has the fifth-fewest innings pitched (504). Although he has his flaws, Lance Lynn could be a valuable addition for the stretch run. With a 2.91 ERA over 20 starts this season, Lynn ranks 12th among qualified starters, though he may experience regression given his expected ERA of 4.32. Securing a reliable innings-eater is crucial for the Guardians to maintain their AL Central lead.
