Sidney Crosby has been eligible to sign a contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins for a month now, but no deal has been finalized. His current contract has one year remaining, and securing an extension is a top priority for the Penguins this offseason.
Rob Rossi of The Athletic had previously reported that a new deal was “close” a week into free agency. However, several weeks have passed since then with no official agreement.
Rossi provides an update, assuring there’s no cause for concern. Negotiations are progressing smoothly, and all parties involved—Crosby, his agent Pat Brisson, and Penguins president and general manager Kyle Dubas—are content with the current status. Rossi notes, “All parties were comfortable enough with where the contract negotiations stood, allowing everyone to proceed with summer plans like vacations and downtime.”
Crosby and Dubas have both emphasized a desire to keep the negotiations private. Despite speculation, Rossi emphasizes that there is no internal concern from the Penguins about Crosby’s commitment. Crosby intends to remain with the team and retire as a Penguin.
Teammate Evgeni Malkin has also expressed confidence in the situation, stating he believes Crosby will sign a deal that keeps him in Pittsburgh for life. Rossi suggests that it will be time to worry only if the 2024-25 season begins without an extension being finalized.
