A sobering thought has started to creep into the minds of Kansas City Chiefs fans as they prepare for another journey to win a third straight Super Bowl: first and foremost, Patrick Mahomes is no longer the young, up-and-coming star he once was; he even acknowledged “getting old” in a recent practice, though it’s not for the reason one might think. Travis Kelce is also getting close to 35 years old and probably only has a few seasons left.
Fortunately for Chiefs supporters, Mahomes doesn’t feel intellectually or physically elderly. Rather, he argues that his out-of-date taste in music is the reason he is becoming older. Mahomes remarks to his teammates in the video, “It’s just crazy to me how much music I don’t know out here.” As if I am aware of my advancing years.
Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, Mahomes is getting older in terms of football, though it’s not as big of a problem at quarterback as it is at other positions. Mahomes should be able to play at a high level for at least another ten years, health permitting.
However, adjusting to all of the fresh, younger faces who frequent the Chiefs locker room each summer will undoubtedly take some time. Only Justin Watson, Carson Wentz, Joe Thuney, and Kelce are older than the signal-caller among the offensive players.
