The Parramatta Eels have officially parted ways with their long-serving captain and fullback, Clint Gutherson, concluding his nine-year tenure with the club. Gutherson, who played 206 games for the Eels and earned representative honors with the New South Wales Blues and the
Australian Kangaroos, was released from the final year of his contract. He is expected to join the St George Illawarra Dragons on a three-year deal worth approximately $2.5 million, where he is anticipated to take over the fullback position.
Gutherson expressed gratitude towards the Eels and their supporters, stating, “It’s been an absolute privilege to wear the blue and gold. The support from the fans over the last nine years has been overwhelming, and I’m truly grateful for the opportunities the club has given me to grow as a player and a person.”
The departure of Gutherson has elicited mixed reactions within the club. Halfback Mitchell Moses, a close friend and teammate, described the situation as “really tough” and “sad to see how it happened and how it ended.” Moses, who has played alongside Gutherson for the past eight years, acknowledged the challenges of professional rugby league, noting, “Footy is a business, and if it’s not working, if something needs to change, that’s just how it is.”
The Eels are undergoing significant changes under new head coach Jason Ryles, who acknowledged Gutherson’s contributions but emphasized the club’s new direction. Ryles stated, “We would have liked Clint to be part of our squad in 2025, but we respect his desire to explore new opportunities and believe … .”
Gutherson’s exit is part of a broader roster overhaul for the Eels, who have released several players following a disappointing season. The club finished 15th, leading to the departure of 11 players, including notable figures like prop Reagan Campbell-Gillard. These changes reflect the Eels’ commitment to rebuilding and improving their performance in the upcoming season.
As the Eels prepare for the 2025 season, they face the challenge of filling the leadership void left by Gutherson’s departure. Mitchell Moses is considered a leading candidate for the captaincy, with his responsibilities expected to increase significantly. Moses remains optimistic about the future, expressing excitement about working under coach Ryles and the potential of the refreshed squad.
The Dragons, under coach Shane Flanagan, view Gutherson’s acquisition as a key component of their rebuilding efforts. Gutherson is expected to bring experience and versatility to the team, potentially replacing Tyrell Sloan at fullback. His leadership and on-field prowess are anticipated to be valuable assets as the Dragons aim to enhance their competitiveness in the league.
Gutherson’s move signifies a new chapter in his career and a significant shift in the NRL landscape. Both the Eels and the Dragons are poised for transformative seasons ahead, with Gutherson’s transfer being a pivotal element in their respective strategies for success.
