The Green Bay Packers’ pass rush has faced significant struggles this season, and in a surprising move, the team traded veteran linebacker Preston Smith after he requested a trade. With Smith now gone, the Packers face the challenge of replacing his presence on the defense.
In light of this, FanSided’s Sayre Bedinger recommended the Packers target James Pearce Jr., an edge rusher from the University of Tennessee, as a potential solution. Pearce, who was once projected as a top overall pick, has since settled into a range as a likely first-round selection. While some projections suggest this draft class may lack a wealth of elite talent, Pearce remains a standout prospect.
“Pearce is undoubtedly one of the top players in this draft,” wrote Bedinger. “The Packers may have to trade up to secure him.”
Pearce has earned first-team All-SEC honors from both coaches and the Associated Press, recording 10 sacks in 2023 and 4.5 so far this season. His ability to consistently pressure quarterbacks has made him one of the most impactful defenders in college football, with his sack numbers beginning to reflect his dominant play. Before the season, Pearce was included in numerous watchlists for major awards.
As the Packers’ defense continues to struggle, particularly in the pass rush, Pearce could offer the team an immediate upgrade. Star rusher Rashan Gary has underperformed this season, and 2023 first-round pick Lukas Van Ness has yet to meet the expectations that came with his selection. Pearce’s addition could provide the spark Green Bay’s defense desperately needs.
