West Virginia — West Virginia football received a major boost today as quarterback Nicco Marchiol announced he will return for the 2025 season. The junior from Chandler, Arizona, has solidified himself as a leader on the team and is expected to be the Mountaineers’ starting quarterback under new head coach Rich Rodriguez.
Marchiol, who is 4-0 as a starter, finished his sophomore season completing 37 of 56 passes for 434 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions. With two years of eligibility remaining, he will have the opportunity to continue his development and lead a program undergoing a resurgence.
“Morgantown has felt like home from the moment I first stepped on campus,” Marchiol said in a statement. “The unwavering support of the fans, the warmth of the community, and the brotherhood I share with my teammates have made this place truly special.”
Marchiol’s decision to return is a significant win for Rodriguez, who has been tasked with rebuilding the Mountaineers into a championship-contending program. Rodriguez has spoken highly of Marchiol’s talent, leadership, and determination, calling him a player who can spearhead the team’s resurgence.
The quarterback’s experience and poise under pressure make him an asset for the Mountaineers. His ability to make plays with both his arm and legs fits well within Rodriguez’s offensive system, which emphasizes creativity and versatility.
Marchiol emphasized his commitment to helping restore West Virginia football to its former glory. “I am honored to be back for 2025. Ready to finish what I came here to do – win games and help restore the pride and glory that this incredible community deserves,” he said.
The return of Marchiol sets the tone for what is shaping up to be an exciting offseason for the Mountaineers. With new coaching staff members, key additions through the transfer portal, and a rejuvenated fan base, West Virginia appears ready to make significant strides.
As the team prepares for spring practice, Marchiol’s leadership will be pivotal. “Let’s make 2025 a year we’ll all cherish for a lifetime,” Marchiol added. “Let’s go to work; greatness is waiting!”
