Steve Wiltfong, Vice President of National College Football Recruiting and Transfer Portal at On3, provided insights into Miami’s recruiting strategy as the Early Signing Period (December 4-6) draws near. Wiltfong discussed the possibility of additional flips to Miami, particularly on the defensive line, as the Hurricanes look to strengthen their 2025 class.
Miami made headlines earlier this week with the successful flip of four-star edge rusher Hayden Lowe from USC. Additionally, four-star edge rusher Herbert Scroggins has been committed to Miami since June. The Hurricanes also boast commitments from three-star defensive linemen Mykah Newton and Donte Simpson in the 2025 class. Simpson committed in August, while Newton flipped from North Carolina State two weeks later. Miami’s 2024 defensive line class is also strong, with five-star prospects like tackle Justin Scott, edge rusher Marquise Lightfoot, and defensive lineman Armondo Blount all signing with the Hurricanes.
In the 2025 class, Miami has already added defensive tackles Artavius Jones and Daylen Russell, as well as edge rushers Cole McConathy, Booker Pickett Jr., and Elias Rudolph. The program is expected to continue targeting defensive linemen, with Wiltfong noting that Miami is actively pursuing further additions.
One key player to watch is defensive tackle Jarquez Carter, a Florida native currently committed to Ohio State. Wiltfong highlighted Carter as Miami’s “Target Numero Uno” on the defensive line. Although Carter remains committed to the Buckeyes, Wiltfong suggested that Miami is steadily making progress in its recruitment of the 6’3″, 290-pound prospect. “If you ask me today, I think he still sticks with Ohio State, but Miami will keep pushing, and we’ll see what happens,” Wiltfong said.
Carter is ranked as the 315th overall prospect, 27th among defensive tackles, and 42nd in the state of Florida in the 2025 class. Miami has previously flipped players from Ohio State, including running back Mark Fletcher (2023), and running back Jordan Lyle and defensive tackle Justin Scott (2024). Could Miami add another major flip from the Buckeyes in 2025?
Miami’s 2025 class also includes six defensive back commitments, four of whom are blue-chip recruits. The Hurricanes’ defensive back group features two cornerbacks and four safeties, further strengthening Miami’s efforts to build a top-tier roster. With a strong finish to the 2025 recruiting cycle, Miami is positioning itself for continued success under head coach Mario Cristobal.
As the Early Signing Period approaches, Miami remains a formidable player in the national recruiting landscape, aiming for a top-five class and a continued push toward the College Football Playoff.
