The Memphis Grizzlies are optimistic that rookie Zach Edey will return to the court “soon,” according to head coach Taylor Jenkins.
However, the timeline for his return will depend on a few steps that the 7-foot-4 center needs to complete before rejoining the team. The Grizzlies
resumed practice on Wednesday at FedExForum, and Jenkins provided an update on Edey’s status.
Jenkins explained that Edey is scheduled to get more contact in the next few days, possibly participating in a full-team practice on Friday.
Afterward, the team plans to assess his progress and make a determination on his readiness later in the week.
Edey has been out of action since November 17, when he sustained a sprained ankle in a game against the Denver Nuggets. Initially, there was
hope that he might return for one of the Grizzlies’ weekend games against either the Boston Celtics or the Washington Wizards. However,
after a practice with the Memphis G League Hustle last week, Jenkins stated that the team wasn’t “comfortable” bringing him back at that time.
During Wednesday’s practice, Edey was given a more intense workload than in previous sessions, signaling a step forward in his
recovery. The team is hopeful that he will soon be cleared for full participation in team activities.
Through 14 games this season, Edey has averaged 11.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. He started in nine of those matchups before coming off the bench for his last five games before the injury.
The Grizzlies will be back in action on Friday night against the Brooklyn Nets at FedExForum, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. Fans can catch the game on FanDuel Sports Network.
